Slavery
When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they were effectively making a statement that they didn't want to live by God's rules, that they wanted to choose for themselves.
Maybe they thought that living by God's rules was restricting. Maybe they craved freedom.
Ironically, instead of being free, disobeying God meant that they became slaves to sin.
Interestingly, in Old Testament times, male slaves were marked by their ears - as in, if you're a guy and you're wearing an earring, it means you're a slave.
Another interesting fact - the hole in your ear will close up if you take the earring out. Physically, we're designed to be set free from slavery.
So even though we're slaves to sin, Jesus' death and resurrection sets us free from the bondage of sin.
